The Reindeer Herders of the Yenisey Gulf

Reindeer herder family outside choom

The Reindeer herder family with whom we stayed for two days poses in front of their choom (a wig-wam type structure layered with canvas over reindeer skins) They lived on a small island in the Yenisey gulf just 20km from the end of the journey.

Nikolai moves forward through the swampy stand of grass and dwarf birch with the prowess and elegance of an experienced hunter.

Bones in the sand

On one particular beach, human bones could be seen scattered, protuding from the sand Many ethnic germans had perished here when their ship ran aground on the way to labour camps near Norilsk in the 1940's.
