Resting at Ulaangom – update posted by Tim Billington on behalf of ...

(Click here to view the complete list of diary entries) Tim called on the Iridium satellite phone to inform me that his computer battery was flat. He has also been unable to take any photos due to the lack of quality batteries available. As a result, he will be unable to send any new photos or expedition diary entries for another few weeks. Tim and Kathrin encountered a difficult journey across the desert-like terrain after trading horses with Dansukh. They completed a 50km trip in one day through the night. Despite being warned by locals about the scarcity of water, Tim and Kathrin found locals living on the edge of Lake Uvs (Uvs Nuur). It was here that water was available from the locals’ wells. A variety of ethnic minority groups live in this region. Tim reports that many of these local people have reddish hair, blue eyes, and are much hairier than most other Mongols. Quite a change in a fairly short distance! On Thursday Kathrin will leave Tim and depart for Ulan Bartor. Tim will take a different route than planned and head into the high mountains. Some these peaks rise to around 4500m with Tim crossing passes up to 3500m. Considering Tim is now at a humble altitude of 700m, he has much climbing to do! This trip will be challenging due to the snow, so he will hire camels or yaks to assist him. Tim has been looking forward to venturing into the mountains, having been eyeing off the numerous glaciers and valleys for many days. Everything is progressing well with over 1,000 km covered. Tim will send more news soon to keep his progress up to date. Tim Billington on behalf of Tim Cope (Click here to view the complete list of diary entries)
