It is with great pleasure to announce that Tim's book, On the Trail of Genghis Khan, An Epic Journey Through The Land Of the Nomads (Bloomsbury Worldwide) won both a category award (best adventure travel book) and the Grand Prize at the 2013 Banff International Book and Film Festival! The award was announced on Thursday the 31st of October while Tim sat nervously in the wings of the Eric Harvie Theatre at the Banff centre.
Tim, who was unprepared, gave a teary speech, given that it was an award that comes close to the anniversary of his father's death in a car accident in November 2006.
Tim said: "I was told by by author Jack Weatherford that 'if you knew what the book would be before you wrote it, you would never write it.' And that is what the book writing process has been like for me - a journey unto itself. For the first three years I was just trying just to write a book, to finish a book.....it was only in the last 12 months of writing that I tried to make it a good book."
The award was given by an international Jury including American Mountaineer, Steve Swenson, Canadian Author and adventurer Bruce Kirkby, and Netherlands based traveller and Writer Anik See. Anik said of the book:
“From the extreme weather conditions and landscape, to holing up in a gold-mining town for more than three months, countering with the seemingly limitless hospitality of the tribes of the Eurasian steppe, Cope relays both the history and current state of this vast and changing area, as well as his experiences and how they altered him, in a way that’s impactful and original..... most would say this was the journey of a lifetime, but it appears that writer and adventure traveller Tim Cope has at least nine lives, and we look forward to reading about each and every one of them.”
Tim's International Tour Continues
Tim could not have hoped for a more illustrious launch for the North American edition of the hardback edition of his book in North America. Since being in Banff, Tim has presented in Montreal, Ottawa, Washington DC (for National Geographic), Minneapolis, and Vancouver.
Ahead, still lies events in Santa Barbara California, Salt Lake City Utah, and New York, Explorers Club. Beyond the USA, Tim will be travelling to the UK for an event for Explorers Connect in London, and the Dundee Mountain Festival in Scotland. Look out for details soon.
Tim is very grateful to World Expeditions for making this tour possible, and to Banff for showing belief in his book from the beginning. Banff Centre fro Creativity in fact offered Tim a Fleck Fellowship in 2011 during which time Tim spent a month in Banff's artist colony writing. In 2011 Tim's film of the same title 'On the Trail of Genghis Khan' won Peoples Choice award at the International Mountain Film Festival.
