High Altai Nomad
The landscape of the Kharkhiraa, that the Khoton call home, is dominated by open slopes dotted with nomad tents, deep river gorges, alpine lakes, and the glacier capped peaks of Kharkhiraa and Turgen. Although it is very rare to spot one, it is worth noting that these mountains are renowned as one of the refuges for the endangered snow leopard.
This is a camel assisted trek in the Kharkhiraa-Turgen massif (part of the greater Altai range) that lies in the remote northwest of Mongolia. This little visited region is home to various tribes of the Oirat Mongolian people, many of whom still live a nomadic way of life, migrating between seasonal pasturelands with their animals. We will be travelling with nomads (and their camels and horses) traversing traditional migratory routes and visiting nomadic families along the way. Horse riding is an option to complement walking, or as your main form of travel. There will be nine days of hiking, but there are many options for extending this walk.
