Summit to Steppe: The Khovd River Expedition
The Khovd River flows 516 kilometres from Mongolia’s biggest glaciers into the lakes and wetlands of the Great Lakes Depression. Along the way it weaves, meanders, and sometimes tumbles its way from glacier‐fed rapids across alpine lakes, through forests and steppe, and gorges that cut deep into rugged semi‐deserts.
In the Autumn nomads migrate down from the mountains to the banks of the Khovd River giving us the opportunity to experience their daily realities and understand the intricate nature of their migratory cycle.
The aim of this journey is to paddle from the highest point navigable on the river (just north of the Khoton/Khurgan lake system) all the way to Olgiy – the capital of Bayan Olgiy province. We now have the option of inflatable kayaks, supported by a cataraft with an oar rig giving us safety and independence on the river. Paddling experience is not required.
