The Snowy: A River Journey
The ‘Snowy’ is an iconic river that flows 352 kilometres from the slopes of the Australian Alps to Bass Strait on the plains of East Gippsland. The river, like the landscape, is varied, ranging from snowmelt streams through to deep gorges, waterfalls, rapids, and long meandering stretches. Water dragons, wallabies, platypus, and brumbies are a common sight as the river winds its way through alpine, rain-shadow, and eventually temperate forest country.
This journey is aimed to offer a glimpse of some of the most spectacular stretches of the Snowy River, from the confluence of the Snowy and the Little Rivers, through to the confluence of the Buchan River. This includes the renowned ‘Tulloch Ard’ gorge which features the largest rapids on the Snowy River, (grade 3-4). The terrain will range from rain shadow woodlands, to steep limestone country with pockets of temperate rainforest. Sandy beaches are a feature of the river and will provide stunning settings for some of our camps.
